Nagawicka Lake

The first formal description of Lake Nagawicka came form Increase Lapham’s description of Wisconsin in 1844. Much of his beautiful description remains a part of Lake Nagawicka. The name  Lake Nagawicka means” there is sand” and this can still be seen in the excellent swimming areas on Lake Nagawicka. One swimming area on Lake Nagawick is off of St. John’s Island and the other areas of sand bars are found around the western part of Lake Nagawicka. One famous settler to the area, Nelson Hawks, started a stage coach stop in 1843 not far from Lake Nagawicka and Hawks Inn is still there today. Lake Nagawicka is two and one-quarter long and three quarters broad. Lake Nagawicka is five and one quarter miles around. The Bark River flows into Lake Nagawicka on it Northwestern shore and continues to add to the sand to the swimming area. St. John’s Island is a beautiful addition to Lake Nagawicka.
